SS Angeliki

Steamship ANGELIKI, Piraeus Registry 180, GRT 331 , was built in 1863 in England. The ship (former ANTZOULETA) belonged to the Ionian coastal shipping company of Giannoulatou brothers. On 15 October 1916 the ship sailed from Piraeus (Greece) around 19.00 o’ clock, under the command of captain Papadogianni,  to Volos-Thessaloniki (Greece) with 400 passengers. At 21.00 pm on the same day, at about 3 miles from Fleves (Greece), the ship was attacked and one out of four torpedoes released hit ANGELIKI close to the bow, thus destroying its entire front part and killing many passengers. The master in command managed to approach the island of Fleves and to adhere the ship to a sandy cove, avoiding this way its immersion. The ship was then detached by lifeguards, repaired and re-established in order to join the fleet of the Greek Coastal Shipping Company SA, until its destruction in 1932. During the attack among others, the following members of the crew, lost their lives:  Ioan. Alafouzos, S. Frangos, Ioan. Sofras, Ioan. Deliotos, Heaters, G. Papandreou.
