SS CARROCCIO

SS Carroccio was originally German; first named SS Madeline Rickmers, the 1657-ton steel steamship was built and owned by Rickmers Reismühlen, Rhederei & Schiffbau A. G. from 1901 to 1906, then sold to the Norddeutscher Lloyd shipping line to become a cargo ship known as SS Coising. She was briefly owned by the Italian Government between 1916 and 1917, during which she was named Carroccio served as an ammunition ship in the convoy of battleship SV Borea.

Both SV Borea and SS Carroccio went down on 15 May 1917, shelled by two Austro-Hungarian warships, Balaton & Czepel. Carroccio was shelled by Balaton and went down 8 nautical miles west of Sopri Ruga, Vlore (Albania). Four crew members were lost: Francesco Guasco, Antonino Longobardo (24 years old), Salvatore Sparacino, and Giovanni Trapani (23 years old).
