Survey of Shipwrecks in the Greek Seas

Since 2003, monuments, ships and aircraft submerged for over 50 years are automatically designated the status of cultural property (Government Gazette 1701/B/19-11-2003). According to the European Marine Observation and Data Network (EMODnet), about 2,000 shipwrecks are in Greek seas (although some have been recovered).

The following link shows a map of Indicative Shipwreck Positions, which forms part of the ongoing “Shipwreck Research in the Greek Seas“. The main reference material for this work comes from retired Admiral H. Dounis’s book “Wrecks in the Greek Seas”.
