SV Roland

On June 9th, 1917, Roland in ballast, was scuttled by the Austrian submarine K.U.K. U-27 (Robert Teufl von Fernland), 30 miles WSW of Cerigo Island (Kythira, Greece).

The Roland refused to sink and was left drifting. She was found 20 miles further from the submarine attack, by a convoy on June 12th, 1917 floating with her stern high up. Representing a danger to navigation, 14 shells were fired at her and she still didn’t sink!

The convoy left her floating.
